Why is my sidebar pushed to bottom?

Has your sidebar been pushed to bottom lately? this is a common problem with "fixed width" layouts on blogs/websites. This problem can occur of one of the following reasons:

A long word or a link on sidebar or "main div"(content div) or
an image that is wider than the fixed width of sidebar or main content

The "long text" problem usually occurs in IE. In order to fix the problem add the following style to your "main div" and sidebar

word-wrap: break-word;
overflow: hidden;

As for the Image problem, you will have to resize the image to fit the layout.

Revert to Classic Template

This article assumes you are using beta blogger with drag and drop layouts and want to use a "custom template" which can only be done on "Classic Templates"

Follow the step by step procedures below to Revert To Classic Templates:

Log into your blogger dashboard.
Click on the "Manage : Layout" link beside your blog name that is displayed.
Click on "Edit HTML" under "Template" Tab.
To be safe, Under backup/restore template, click Download full template and save it to disk
Go to the bottom of the page and click "Revert to Classic Templates".

Then Copy-Paste the HTML Template code that you have downloaded, into the textarea and then save & publish to view the changes.

How to add an header image to your blog

This method will work with the new drag and drop layouts of the blogger. In order to use a header graphic on your blog, you need to have your graphic on your disk or already uploaded somewhere on the web. Then continue to "manage layouts" option from your "blogger dashboard".

Make sure you are in the "page elements" tab, click to edit your header element. In the window that pops up, you have to either browse for the image on your disk or insert the full path of the image and click "save changes".

Click "edit" on the header element again, and choose the option of "Instead of title and description" option and click save changes.

That's all you need to do to have your header image instead of Blog Title and Description.

Common Errors in XML Layouts

The entity name must immediately follow the '&' in the entity reference

Use & instead of "&" in your template.

The element type "div" must be terminated by the matching end-tag

There is an open tag in your template, so close it.

The element type "img" must be terminated by the matching end-tag

You havent terminated your IMG tag properly, in your template code
change <img src="http://...." > to <img src="http://..." /> .
Note the forward trailing slash before closing the angular bracket.

Newer XML layout browser problems

The blogger team has confirmed that the newer "drag and drop" layouts do not work with safari. It works with opera with some minor glitches. So, Safari users have to use the classic templates. To use the newer XML Layouts of blogger Firefox or Internet Explorer 6 or higher is required.

Errors using Modified Blogger Templates

If you are getting the following error when you are trying to update/modify your blogger template then chances are that the template code that you are using is not compatible with the "New Drag-and-Drop" layout of blogger.

Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: Content is not allowed in prolog.

In order to use a different blogger template that you may have downloaded from another site, you will have to "Revert to Classic Template". Follow the step by step procedures below:

Log into your blogger dashboard.
Click on the "Manage : Layout" link beside your blog name that is displayed.
Click on "Edit HTML" link.
Go to the bottom of the page and click "Revert to Classic Templates".

Then Copy-Paste the HTML Template code that you have downloaded, into the textarea and then save & publish to view the changes.

Upgrade your Classic Template

Follow the Steps below :

On the dashboard, click "Manage : Template" link.

Go, into "Customize Design" under "Template" Tab.

Click the red button which says "Upgrade Your Template"

Select any of the existing layouts and click "Save"

Your new Blog Layout is ready. You can now drag the elements around and change the fonts, colors of other elements. Enjoy!
